New Zealand Legal Requirements
Powered vessels over 4 metres and non-powered vessels over 6 metres are required to display a clearly visible name or identifying number.
The identifier must:
Contain at least two letters or numbers (not the vessel's make, model or brand)
Have characters at least 90mm high and 80mm wide
Be in a contrasting colour
Be clearly legible from 50 metres away (or comply with your national sporting body requirements)
Even if your vessel doesn't legally require identification, displaying a name or number is recommended to help identify ownership in the event of an emergency.
